About Arrohattoc People
The Arrohattoc were a small Algonquian-speaking people of tidewater Virginia who lived on the upper James River in the late 1500s and early 1600s, in what is now Henrico County just below Richmond. They drop out of the English record within about a decade of Jamestown's founding. No tribe carries the name today. Their survivors are believed to have folded into neighboring Powhatan communities, whose descendants include the present Pamunkey, Mattaponi and other Virginia tribes.
What set the Arrohattoc apart was position, political and geographic. They were one of the six original chiefdoms that Wahunsenacawh, the paramount chief the English called Powhatan, inherited before he expanded his domain to some thirty tribes, a territory known as Tsenacommacah. That placed them in the inner circle of the paramountcy, not among its conquered fringe. Their town stood on the north bank of the James a few miles downstream from the falls, the western edge of the Powhatan world. Above the fall line lived the Monacan, Siouan speakers and longtime rivals, so the Arrohattoc were a border people: close to the paramount chief's home ground and close to an enemy frontier.
They were never numerous. John Smith counted about thirty fighting men and William Strachey about sixty, which points to a few hundred people at most. They lived as their neighbors did, in houses of bent saplings covered with bark or woven mats, growing corn, beans and squash, trapping fish in river weirs and hunting deer in the fall. Their chief, the weroance, inherited office through the mother's line and passed tribute in corn, skins and copper up to the paramount chief. Religious life ran through priests and temples that held the preserved bodies of dead chiefs. The deity who demanded attention was Okeus. A more distant creator, Ahone, asked for little.
The Arrohattoc enter written history in May 1607, when Christopher Newport's exploring party rowed up the James and was feasted so generously at their town that the English called the place Arahatec's Joy. The goodwill did not last. Food raids, reprisals and the First Anglo-Powhatan War wore the upper James communities down, and in 1611 Sir Thomas Dale planted the fortified settlement of Henricus on Arrohattoc land. After that they vanish as a distinct people. Their language, Virginia Algonquian, fell silent by the 1790s, but it still lives in English words such as raccoon, opossum, moccasin and persimmon. Henricus Historical Park, in their old territory, includes a recreated Powhatan village that bears their name.
