About Arikara People
The Arikara call themselves Sahnish, "the people," and what sets them apart on the northern Plains is that they were never really Plains nomads at all. They are village farmers, the northernmost branch of the Caddoan-speaking world, cousins of the Pawnee who moved up the Missouri River generations before Europeans arrived and built fortified towns of domed earth lodges on the river terraces of what is now South Dakota and North Dakota. Women grew corn, beans, squash and sunflowers in the bottomlands, and Arikara seed corn was a trade good that horse-mounted neighbors like the Lakota and Cheyenne came to the villages to buy. Corn was not only food. In Arikara religion Mother Corn is the intermediary between people and the creator Nesaru, and the sacred bundles kept by village priests structured the ceremonial year. The name outsiders use is thought to come from a Pawnee word for "horns," after an old custom of men wearing two upright pieces of bone in their hair, and fur traders shortened it to "Ree."
The Arikara were once many village bands with their own dialects, and their history since the 1700s is one of contraction and stubborn survival. Smallpox in the 1780s collapsed dozens of villages into a handful. Lewis and Clark stopped with them in 1804. In 1823, after a clash with a fur trading party, the Arikara became the target of the first US Army campaign against a Plains tribe. Pressed by Lakota expansion, they moved north and in 1862 joined the Mandan and Hidatsa at Like-a-Fishhook Village near Fort Berthold, the arrangement that became today's Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation. Arikara men then scouted for the US Army, and several died with Custer's column at the Little Bighorn in 1876, a fact the community still marks. The twentieth century brought a different kind of flood: the Garrison Dam drowned the reservation's bottomlands under Lake Sakakawea in the 1950s, and the Arikara were relocated to the area around White Shield, North Dakota, still their center. The language is now spoken fluently by very few people, and revitalization runs through the local school and tribal college. Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant, is widespread, but sacred bundle traditions, earth lodge revival and powwow life sit alongside it, and the oil economy of the Bakken has reshaped daily life on the reservation as much as anything since the dam.
