About Klickitat People
The Klickitat lived on a seam. Their country sat north of the Columbia River, where the wet western slope of the Cascades breaks into oak, pine and open bunchgrass, between two economies that needed each other: the salmon and shell wealth of the lower river, and the roots, hides and horses of the interior Plateau. They worked that gap on purpose. Klickitat packers moved goods over the mountain passes and down to the great markets at the narrows near present-day The Dalles. The name itself is usually traced to a Chinookan word meaning beyond, which tells you who was doing the naming and from which direction they were seen to arrive. For themselves they used a term generally glossed as prairie people, which names the ground they preferred: high grassland and oak savanna under Pahto, the mountain now called Adams. Their language is a dialect of Northwest Sahaptin, near enough to Yakama speech to be mutually intelligible, distantly related to Nez Perce, and completely unrelated to the Chinookan languages of their downriver trading partners. First-language speakers are very few now, and the work of keeping it alive happens in classrooms and longhouses rather than at home.
Two shocks bent the history. In the 1830s malaria emptied villages along the lower Columbia and the Willamette, and Klickitat families pushed south into that opening, ranging as far as the Umpqua and Rogue country before American settlement forced them back north within a generation. Then in 1855 the treaty at Camp Stevens folded them into the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, fourteen groups made into one legal body on a reservation east of home. War followed within months. Their descendants are Yakama citizens, and the county, the river and the old trail still carry the name. Ceremony runs on the calendar of first foods: salmon, then roots, then huckleberries, each welcomed with a feast before anyone eats freely. Washat longhouse practice, with its drums and its line of singers, sits alongside the Indian Shaker Church and ordinary Christianity without much friction. The berry fields on the south side of Mount Adams are still picked every late summer under a long-standing understanding with the Forest Service that set part of them aside for tribal use. And the baskets: coiled cedar root, tight enough to hold water, the design laid onto the outside in bleached beargrass and dyed bark by a technique called imbrication. Museums have labeled them Klickitat baskets for a century. Weavers are still making them.
