About Yahuskin People
The Yahuskin are a Northern Paiute people from the high desert lake country of south-central Oregon. Today they are bound up in an unusual partnership: they are one of the three peoples who make up the Klamath Tribes, alongside the Klamath and Modoc, whose languages and histories are quite different from theirs. Federal paperwork still calls them the Yahooskin Band of Snake Indians. The name is left over from the nineteenth century, when settlers and officials lumped the Northern Paiute and Shoshone bands east of the Cascades together as Snakes.
Their home ground was the closed basin country around Summer Lake, Lake Abert, Silver Lake and Goose Lake. It is a land of alkali flats, marsh edges and sagebrush, where water decides everything. Like other Northern Paiute, they moved with the seasons: waterfowl and fish from the wetlands, roots and seeds as each came ready, rabbit drives worked by the whole community, and tule reed cut for mats, shelters and duck decoys. Northern Paiute bands were often named for a food they relied on, which says a lot about how closely people read the land. Their language, Northern Paiute, belongs to the Western Numic branch of Uto-Aztecan and ties them to relatives across Nevada, Idaho and California. The first turning point came in 1864, as fighting between the army and Snake bands was spreading across eastern Oregon. Yahuskin leaders signed a treaty with the United States together with the Klamath and Modoc. They gave up most of their territory and agreed to settle on the Klamath Reservation. The second came in 1954, when Congress passed the Klamath Termination Act, which ended federal recognition and broke up the reservation, and most of its forest was sold off. The tribes won recognition back in 1986, though not the land. Their treaty hunting, fishing and water rights survived termination and still carry real weight across the Klamath Basin.
Religious life today blends Christianity with older Northern Paiute ideas about spiritual power and healing. The Ghost Dance of 1870, which began among Northern Paiute in Nevada, spread into the Klamath country as well. The community centers on Chiloquin. The tribes' Kla-Mo-Ya Casino there takes its name from the first syllables of the three peoples, and the annual Restoration Celebration marks the return of federal recognition.
