Today they are bound up in an unusual partnership: they are one of the three peoples who make up the Klamath Tribes, alongside the Klamath and Modoc, whose languages and histories are quite different from theirs. Federal paperwork still calls them the Yahooskin Band of Snake Indians. The name is left over from the nineteenth century, when settlers and officials lumped the Northern Paiute and Shoshone bands east of the Cascades together as Snakes.
Their home ground was the closed basin country around Summer Lake, Lake Abert, Silver Lake and Goose Lake. It is a land of alkali flats, marsh edges and sagebrush, where water decides everything. Like other Northern Paiute, they moved with the seasons: waterfowl and fish from the wetlands, roots and seeds as each came ready, rabbit drives worked by the whole community, and tule reed cut for mats, shelters and duck decoys.
