About Xunyu People
The Xunyu were a herding people on the northern edge of the early Chinese world. His followers were ready to fight, but Danfu would not see fathers and sons killed so that he could remain their lord. Instead he left, crossed the mountains and settled again below Mount Qi, and his people followed him. That retreat put the Zhou on the plain where they grew strong enough to overthrow the Shang. It gives the Xunyu a brief but outsized part in the founding story of China's longest dynasty. Mencius later drew a lesson from it: only the wise, when small, know how to serve a larger power. He paired King Tai's dealings with the Xunyu with King Goujian's submission to the state of Wu.
Who the Xunyu actually were is harder to say. Commentators on Sima Qian treated the Xunyu, Xianyun and Xiongnu as one people that each dynasty called by a different name. In the early twentieth century the scholar Wang Guowei stretched that chain back to the Guifang of Shang-era records. Many modern historians are warier. Chinese writers often reused old names for whoever held the north at the time, and the similar sound of Xunyu, Xiongnu and the name of the Huns in Europe has produced more theories than proof. Today the Xunyu survive as a name in the classics and an open question in the history of the steppe.
