About Turung People

It is a variety of Singpho, the name used in India for the Jingpho, a Sino-Tibetan hill people whose homeland spans northern Burma, southwestern China and India's northeastern frontier. According to the Turung themselves, the switch happened during a long stretch under Singpho rule, before they came down into Assam. They were one of several Tai groups that crossed from Burma in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They took on the language of the people who ruled them, and they kept their name and their faith. They eventually settled in villages south of the Brahmaputra, mainly in what are now Jorhat, Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts, and most of the community still lives there.
Religion is what still ties them to the Tai world. The Turung practice Theravada Buddhism, and the village monastery sets the rhythm of the religious year, much as it does among their Phake, Khamyang and Aiton cousins. Those groups, along with the far larger and now largely Hindu Ahom, make up the Tai peoples of Assam. The Turung are counted among them even though their speech sets them apart.
