About Agri People
The Agri take their name from the agar, the salt pan. For generations that work set them apart on the northern Konkan coast of Maharashtra: letting seawater into shallow beds, raking up the crust as it dried, and carrying salt through the hot months before the monsoon. When the rains came they switched to rice, planted in low fields behind earthen embankments that had to be repaired against the tide year after year. They are a Hindu caste community, not a tribe. Their roots are in the villages of Raigad, Thane and Palghar districts and in the old settlements that the city of Navi Mumbai has grown up around.
They speak a dialect of Marathi, usually just called Agri, that other Marathi speakers recognize at once. It is very close to the speech of the neighboring Koli fishing communities, and the two peoples are often named together. They share coastal villages, devotion to the goddess Ekvira at her cave shrine near Karla, and the rowdy Shimga festival that marks Holi in the Konkan. They also share a stock of songs that found their way into Marathi popular music. Weddings are where Agri identity is most on display. They run loud and long, and older women called dhavlarin sing the dhavle, ritual songs in the dialect that go with the wedding rites.
The twentieth century turned salt makers and rice farmers into a political force. In the 1930s, tenant farmers of the old Kolaba district, many of them Agri, held out for years in a strike against the khoti landlord system. From the 1970s the state took much of their paddy and salt land to build Navi Mumbai and, later, the container port at Nhava Sheva. The fights over compensation included a 1984 protest around Uran that ended in police firing, and many were led by D. B. Patil. In 2021 Agri and Koli groups took to the streets to demand that the new Navi Mumbai airport carry his name. Many families now earn their living from land, construction and trade rather than salt. Still, the dialect, the village goddess and the wedding songs mark who is Agri.
