Related communities live in Mizoram and Tripura in India and in Rakhine State in Myanmar, the old Arakan that Tanchangya tradition names as the place their ancestors left. Their language is Indo-Aryan, related to Bengali. That makes Tanchangya and Chakma speakers something of a language island in the hills, because the Marma, Tripura, Mro and Bawm around them speak Sino-Tibetan languages. Village Buddhism sets the rhythm of the year. Households feed monks, whole communities go to the temple to offer robes after the rainy-season retreat, and the dead are cremated.
