Sundi Erotic

The Sundi are Kongo people who carry the name of an old province. Nsundi was a northern province of the Kingdom of Kongo, a governorship that often went to a likely heir. Afonso I held it before he took the throne in the early sixteenth century. Today most Basundi live on the north side of the Congo River, in the hills and valleys of the Pool department in the Republic of the Congo. Closely related communities live in Kongo Central province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially in the Manianga country around Luozi.

Their speech, Kisundi, is a northern variety of Kikongo, a Bantu language. It shades into the dialects of their Lari, Bwende and Manianga neighbors with no sharp border. Most Sundi also use Kituba, Lingala or French, depending on which side of the national frontier they live on and how much time they spend in town. Kisundi has a bigger place in the written record than its size would suggest. The Swedish missionary Karl Laman drew heavily on the Sundi area for his Kikongo dictionary and his study of Kongo life. Much of that work came from notebooks that local catechists filled with proverbs, clan histories and accounts of healing and ritual in the early twentieth century.

Clan life follows the Kongo matrilineal pattern. A person belongs to their mother's kanda, and inheritance and many family obligations follow that line, even for families long settled in Brazzaville or Kinshasa. Most Sundi are Christian, Catholic or Protestant. Churches founded by Swedish missions have long been strong in this part of Kongo country, and prophetic movements such as Kimbanguism have a following too. Joining a church rarely erased older ideas about ancestors, spiritual power and the causes of misfortune. Those ideas still come up around illness and at funerals, which are large, costly events that bind families together.

Recent history has been hard on the Pool. The department was a battleground in the country's civil war of the late 1990s and again in 2016 and 2017, when fighting between government forces and militias drove large numbers of rural families from their homes. Displacement and the ordinary pull of Brazzaville's markets and schools have moved many people toward the city. What holds Sundi identity together is less a fixed territory than a set of ties: a shared dialect, clan membership that still matters at marriages and burials, and a name that traces back to a kingdom recorded in European archives since the 1480s.
