About Bafia People
The Bafia go by two names. Bafia is the one on maps, road signs and census forms, and they share it with the town at the center of their country. Bekpak is what they call themselves, and Rikpa' is the language that sets them apart from the people a few villages over. Their homeland is in central Cameroon, in the Mbam-et-Inoubou department north of Yaoundé. Here the southern forest thins into grassland, with strips of woods along the rivers that drain toward the Sanaga.
Rikpa' is a Bantu language, but a visitor from farther south would not follow it. It belongs to a small cluster of languages spoken along the Mbam, and its closest well-known relative is Lefa', the language of the neighboring Balom. Central Cameroon is packed with languages, and the Bafia live right in the middle of them. Their Banen and Yambassa neighbors speak other Mbam languages, Beti speech takes over toward the capital, and to the north the Vute and Tikar speak languages outside Bantu altogether. French is what carries school, government and most business across those lines.
The nineteenth century hit the Mbam country hard. As the Fulbe expanded out of the Adamawa plateau, slave raiding spread through the region, and Vute war chiefs carried it south toward the river. German forces put down the Vute raiders around the turn of the century and brought the region into Kamerun. Just before the First World War, the German ethnographer Günter Tessmann worked among the Bafia. His book on them came out in the 1930s and is still a standard source, dated as it is, that anthropologists cite. After the war the area came under French rule, and the town of Bafia grew into a department seat and the home of a Catholic diocese.
Farming is still the backbone of Bafia life. Households eat cassava, groundnuts, plantain and maize, and cocoa, the cash crop across much of the Centre Region, brings in money. Most Bafia are Christian, largely Catholic, and the church shapes Sundays, weddings and funerals. Duties to lineage elders and to the dead have not disappeared, though. Many younger Bafia now live in Yaoundé or Douala, and a death in the home village still pulls them back. In central Cameroon a funeral is a public event, and family members are expected to show up and help pay for it.
