About Sinixt People
The Sinixt are a river people whose country was the upper Columbia: the long, narrow Arrow Lakes, the Slocan and lower Kootenay valleys, and the salmon fishery at Kettle Falls. Their name is usually rendered as people of the place of the bull trout. It suits a nation whose year followed fish runs, root digging, berry seasons and mountain hunts along a steep, forested corridor that is now split between British Columbia and Washington State. They speak a dialect of nsyilxcən, the Interior Salish language they share with the Syilx (Okanagan), Colville and Sanpoil, so speech carried easily to the west and south. To the east lived the Ktunaxa, whose language is related to no other. Even so, both peoples built the sturgeon-nosed canoe, a bark boat whose bow and stern taper to points below the waterline. Winters meant pit houses dug partly into the ground, and red ochre pictographs still mark cliffs along the lakes.
The 1846 border ran straight through Sinixt territory, and the century that followed pulled the people apart. Smallpox, mining rushes and settlement pushed many families south, where they became the Lakes Tribe, one of twelve tribes in the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Those who stayed north were listed as the Arrow Lakes Band. In 1956, a few years after its last registered member died, Ottawa declared the band extinct. Grand Coulee Dam had already drowned Kettle Falls, and in 1968 the Hugh Keenleyside Dam raised the Arrow Lakes over village sites and graves. The Sinixt never accepted that verdict. From the late 1980s, descendants returned to Vallican in the Slocan Valley to rebury ancestral remains and protect the burial ground from road building. In 2010 Richard Desautel, a Lakes Tribe member living in Washington, shot an elk near Castlegar to test his right to hunt there. In 2021 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in his favor, holding that Indigenous peoples now living outside the country can still hold constitutional rights in the lands their ancestors occupied. Most Sinixt today live in and around the Colville Reservation. There, Christianity, much of it Catholic since the Jesuit mission at Kettle Falls, exists alongside the sweat lodge and first foods ceremonies, and children are once again learning nsyilxcən.
