Their villages sit in the low hills southwest of Thiès, around Diass, in the wedge of western Senegal between Dakar, Thiès and Mbour. They call their language Saafi-Saafi. It belongs to the small Cangin group, whose other languages, Noon, Lehar, Ndut and Palor, are spoken by nearby communities that also count themselves Serer. The Cangin languages are only distantly related to Serer proper, and linguists still argue about where exactly they fit among the Atlantic languages of West Africa. Day to day, most Saafi also speak Wolof, the country's common language, and many use French at school and at work.
The land shaped their history. The wooded hills let village communities, organized around lineages rather than kings, hold out at the edge of the Wolof states of Cayor and Baol. French rule reached the area in the second half of the nineteenth century, along with the railway through Thiès. Catholic missionaries followed, and the Serer became the Senegalese people among whom Christianity took deepest root.
