About Quapaw People
The Quapaw call themselves Ogáxpa, the downstream people, and that name carries their history in it. They are one of five related Dhegiha Siouan nations, alongside the Osage, Omaha, Ponca and Kaw, and their tradition describes a parting on a great river: some went up against the current, the Quapaw went down with it. They stopped at the confluence of the Arkansas and the Mississippi, in the southeastern corner of what is now Arkansas, and held that river junction when the French arrived. Marquette and Jolliet turned back there in 1673. Henri de Tonti built Arkansas Post beside a Quapaw village in 1686, the first European settlement in the lower valley, and the alliance lasted the better part of a century. The state name is not even Quapaw: Akansa is what neighboring Illinois speakers called them, the French wrote it down, and it stuck to the map.
Smallpox did what French muskets never had to, and by the early 1800s the nation was small enough for treaties to finish the job. Cessions in 1818 and 1824 took the Arkansas homeland; a forced move to Caddo country on the Red River brought flood and famine, and many simply walked back. In 1833 the remnant settled in the far northeastern corner of Indian Territory, where the Quapaw Nation still has its seat. In 1893 the tribal council allotted its own reservation without waiting for Washington, and Congress ratified the act two years later. Then the lead and zinc were found underneath, some allottees became briefly and dangerously wealthy, court-appointed guardians relieved them of much of it, and the mines left behind Tar Creek: chat piles, poisoned water, and the town of Picher emptied and dissolved. The nation has since taken over the cleanup itself, the first tribe to run a Superfund remediation on its own ground, and it also runs cattle and bison herds, a meat plant, a coffee roastery and a casino. Catholicism arrived with the French and stayed; the Native American Church took hold in the 1890s and remains. The powwow at Devil's Promenade has run since 1872. The last fluent first-language speakers of Ogáxpa are gone, but the language is taught again from what Dorsey and later linguists recorded, and painted bison robes from the early 1700s survive in French museums, showing a Quapaw view of the world that predates every treaty.
