About Qemant People
The Qemant are an Agaw people of the highlands north and west of Gondar, in Ethiopia's Amhara Region, and for most of their recorded history what set them apart from their neighbors was not land or livelihood but what they did on Saturdays. Their religion, which outsiders have labeled pagan-Hebraic for want of a better handle, centered on a creator god, a strict Sabbath, food prohibitions, and worship in sacred groves on hilltops. Those groves are still visible from a distance: dark islands of old trees on ridgelines otherwise cleared for barley and teff generations ago. A high priest, the wambar, presided over a body of lesser priests, and men who took on the fuller ritual obligations lived under purity rules that ordinary laity did not. Qemant tradition brought a founding ancestor to these hills from Canaan, which placed them, in their own telling, adjacent to but not the same as the Beta Israel, who were also Agaw and also lived in the Gondar country.
The language, Qimant, is Central Cushitic, close kin to Bilen, Xamtanga and Awngi, and it lost ground steadily to Amharic across the twentieth century. It did not. Since 2015 a self-determination movement has pressed for Qemant self-administration within Amhara Region. A 2017 referendum granted self-rule to a set of kebeles and left others in dispute, and the dispute turned violent: killings, burned villages, tens of thousands displaced, all of it made far worse by the war that engulfed northern Ethiopia after 2020. Whatever the political settlement eventually looks like, the argument has made the label a live one again, claimed rather than merely inherited.
