Nandi is a Kalenjin language in the Southern Nilotic branch. It is close enough to Kipsigis, Keiyo and Tugen that speakers move between them with little effort. That closeness helps explain why the shared Kalenjin name stuck so firmly after it was taken up in the 1940s and 1950s, from a phrase meaning I tell you. Swahili and English are used for school, church and business. Nandi is what people speak at home.
Before colonial rule the Nandi kept cattle and also grew finger millet and sorghum. Men passed through a repeating cycle of named age-sets, and a man's set decided his place, first as a warrior and later as an elder. Ritual authority belonged to the orkoiyot, a hereditary diviner and prophet from the Talai clan. The best remembered, Koitalel arap Samoei, led resistance as the Uganda Railway pushed through Nandi grazing land. In 1905 the British officer Richard Meinertzhagen killed him at a meeting called to talk peace. The Nandi were then confined to a reserve and lost highland ground to settler farms. Some of that land is now planted with the tea estates that define the Nandi Hills.
