About Olu'bo People
The Olu'bo are a small hill people of South Sudan who speak a Central Sudanic language in a neighborhood where almost everyone else speaks a Nilotic one. That single fact does most of the work of setting them apart. Their home is the Luluba Hills, a cluster of rocky ridges east of Juba in Central Equatoria. Older sources and most maps call them Lulubo or Luluba; Olu'bo is their own name. They number in the low tens of thousands, with villages concentrated around Lokiliri and along the road that runs southeast from the capital toward Nimule.
Their language belongs to the Moru-Madi branch of Central Sudanic, and its closest relative is Madi, spoken farther south along the Nile and into Uganda. Most of that language family lives west of the river. The Olu'bo sit east of it, cut off from their linguistic kin and ringed by Bari speakers to the west and Lokoya and Lotuko to the north and east. The result is a people who switch languages as a matter of course. Bari is widely understood, Juba Arabic handles the market and the road, and English turns up in school and church.
Living among Nilotic neighbors has shaped more than vocabulary. Like the Lokoya, Lotuko and Pari, the Olu'bo run village affairs through the monyomiji, the ruling generation of men in their prime who hold collective authority until a younger generation pushes them into retirement.
