About Nyakyusa People
The Nyakyusa live at the far northern end of Lake Nyasa. There the land rises from hot, flat rice country along the shore into cool, rainy hills around Mount Rungwe. The volcanic soil is some of the richest in Tanzania, and nearly all of it is farmed: banana groves, tea estates, maize, coffee and rice fields share the same stretch of hills and plain. Across the Songwe River in Malawi live the Ngonde, close relatives who speak a form of the same language. The river became the border between German and British colonial territory, and it still divides communities with shared ancestry, speech and custom.
Outside East Africa, the Nyakyusa are best known for the age-village. The anthropologists Godfrey and Monica Wilson recorded the practice in the 1930s. Boys of about ten or eleven left their fathers' homesteads and built huts together at the edge of the settlement, and in time that group became a village of its own. Wives joined when they married, but the heart of the place was a band of age-mates, not a family line. About once a generation, a large coming out ceremony handed authority from the older generation to the younger, and a chief's land was split between two sons. Monica Wilson titled her best-known book on the Nyakyusa Good Company, after the value they placed on eating, talking and living well among peers. Colonial rule, mission schools and farming for cash wore the system down over the twentieth century.
Their language, Nyakyusa-Ngonde, is a Bantu language. In Malawi its local form is often called Kyangonde, and speakers there also use Chitumbuka and English. In Tanzania almost everyone switches easily into Swahili for school, markets and government. Christianity came in the 1890s, when Moravian and Lutheran missionaries arrived in the Rungwe hills, and it spread widely. Most Nyakyusa today are Christian, in Moravian, Lutheran, Catholic and Pentecostal churches, and there is a smaller Muslim minority. In some families, older rites for the ancestors quietly continue alongside church life.
In the twentieth century many Nyakyusa men traveled far for wages, to the copper mines of Northern Rhodesia and on to South Africa. Today Mbeya city draws people down from the hills. For most, though, home is still Rungwe and Kyela: tea around Tukuyu, rice on the lake plain, and bananas almost everywhere.
