About Nashaway People
The Nashaway were an Algonquian people of the upper Nashua River valley in what is now north-central Massachusetts, a small nation that held that country until King Philip's War scattered them in 1675 and 1676. Their survivors folded into the Pennacook, the Abenaki to the north and the neighboring Nipmuc, and it is among those peoples that their descendants are found today. Their territory ran from the river meadows around present-day Lancaster to the Waushacum ponds in Sterling and the slopes of Mount Wachusett, the lone peak that dominates the region. The name is usually glossed as the land between the rivers, or as a stream with a pebbled bottom. They spoke an Eastern Algonquian dialect close to that of the Nipmuc, and colonial writers never settled whether to count them as Nipmuc or as part of the Pennacook alliance up the Merrimack. That uncertainty says more about the English than the Nashaway: politics here ran on kinship and the standing of individual sachems, not on borders. Life followed the seasons. Families planted corn, beans and squash on the floodplain, worked the spring fish runs at the falls, and moved into the uplands to hunt in the cold months.
Epidemics in the early 1600s cut their numbers before any Englishman settled among them. In 1643 the sachem Sholan invited a Watertown trader to open a post on his land and sold the tract that became the town of Lancaster, and for a generation the two communities lived side by side without much trouble. The balance did not hold. War with the Mohawk drained the Nashaway through the 1660s, and when Daniel Gookin, the colony's superintendent of Indian affairs, sent them a Christian teacher from Natick in 1674, he wrote that they had once been a great people and now counted fifteen or sixteen families. The mission barely took root. Under Shoshanim, whom the English called Sagamore Sam, the Nashaway joined the uprising, and in February 1676 a force led by the war captain Monoco burned Lancaster and carried off the minister's wife, Mary Rowlandson. Her captivity narrative became one of the first bestsellers in English America, which means the most widely read account of the Nashaway was written by their prisoner. By autumn Shoshanim and Monoco had been hanged in Boston, many captives had been sold into slavery, and the rest had gone north. The river, the city of Nashua in New Hampshire and Wachusett itself still carry names from their language.
