The Nambya are the people behind one of Zimbabwe's best known place names, though few visitors realize it. Hwange is the dynastic title of the Nambya paramount chief. Colonial clerks bent it into "Wankie" and attached it to a colliery, a town and eventually the country's largest national park. The Nambya live around all three, in the hot, dry country of Matabeleland North between the park and the Zambezi, with some communities across the border in Botswana.
Their founding story is a breakaway. Oral tradition holds that in the eighteenth century a Rozvi prince remembered as Sawanga left the Rozvi state on the central plateau and pushed northwest with his followers. He absorbed the people he met along the way and set up a small kingdom of his own. The plateau's building habit came with him. The successive Nambya capitals of Shangano, Bumbusi and Mtoa are dry-stone walled sites in the Great Zimbabwe tradition, raised here in local sandstone. Ndebele raids in the nineteenth century broke the kingdom: a reigning Hwange was killed, and many Nambya sheltered north of the Zambezi for years before drifting home.
Then came coal and wildlife, in that order. The colliery that opened in the early 1900s pulled in workers from across southern and central Africa and made the Nambya one community among many in their own district. The game reserve declared in 1928 cleared families off ancestral land, and Bumbusi and Mtoa now sit inside the park boundary. Elders still arrange access to Bumbusi for rainmaking rites, because to them it is a working shrine, not a ruin.
The language, also called Nambya, is Bantu and sits closest to Kalanga on the western edge of the Shona cluster. That sets it apart from the Tonga spoken along the river and the Ndebele that dominates the province. For most of the twentieth century schools taught in Ndebele and Nambya stayed a home language. Catholic missionaries compiled a dictionary and grammar, local activists kept pressing, and the 2013 constitution named Nambya one of sixteen official languages. It is now taught in Hwange district classrooms.
