About Modh People
Modh is less a single caste than a shared name of origin. Brahmins, merchants and oil pressers in Gujarat all carry it, and what ties them together is a place: Modhera, a small town in Mehsana district in the north of the state. The town is best known for the Sun Temple built there under the Chaulukya king Bhima I in the eleventh century. Every Modh branch treats Modhera as its ancestral seat. Modheshwari, a local form of the goddess Matangi, is honored as the community's lineage goddess, and her temple in the town still draws families back for vows and family rites.
There are three main branches. Modh Brahmins trace themselves to the Dharmaranya legend in the Skanda Purana, which describes the country around Modhera as a sacred forest where priestly families were settled. Trivedi and Chaturvedi are common surnames among them. Modh Vaniks, also called Modh Banias, made their name in trade. They moved out to the ports and princely capitals of Saurashtra and split over time into sections that marry only among themselves.
