About Majhi People
The Majhi take their name from their trade. In Nepali, as in much of northern South Asia, a majhi is a boatman. For generations these were the people who ferried travelers, porters and livestock over the rivers of Nepal's middle hills, and who fished those same rivers with nets and bamboo traps. Their villages sit low, on terraces and sandbanks beside the Sun Koshi and other rivers of central and eastern Nepal and the inner Terai. They are often well below the ridge settlements of their neighbors. Hill farmers plan the year around crops, but Majhi life has long followed the water: the monsoon flood, the fishing season, the weeks when a crossing turns dangerous.
Their ancestral language, also called Majhi, is Indo-Aryan and close to the speech of the Bote, another river people farther west. It has been giving way to Nepali for a long time. Today only a minority of Majhi speak it well, and most children grow up speaking Nepali. Religious life is mostly Hindu. Dashain and Tihar mark the calendar as they do across the hills, and families also worship their own clan and household deities.
