About Lamet People
The Lamet, who call themselves Rmeet, are an Austroasiatic hill people of northwestern Laos, concentrated in the uplands of Bokeo and Luang Namtha provinces. They speak a Palaungic language of the Mon-Khmer branch and number in the tens of thousands. They became widely known to scholarship through the Swedish ethnographer Karl Gustav Izikowitz, whose 1951 monograph documented Lamet society in detail.
Society and subsistence
The Lamet are swidden farmers who cultivate upland dry rice as their staple, clearing and rotating hillside fields, and raising buffalo and pigs that carry great ceremonial and social value. Villages of wooden houses on a ridge traditionally centered on a men's communal house. Izikowitz described how Lamet men often traveled to the lowlands for wage labor, returning with silver and goods that were converted into buffalo, bronze drums, and other valuables central to prestige and ritual exchange. Standing was measured in these heirloom objects and in the ability to host large sacrificial feasts. Religious life is animist, honoring ancestral and locality spirits, with ritual specialists conducting the sacrifices and observances that mark the farming year.

Traditional Lamet clothing was woven of cotton, with women wearing wrapped skirts and simple jackets and men wearing loincloths or trousers, often in dark indigo cloth.
