About Alas People
The Alas are a valley people. The Alas are Muslims in Aceh, the only Indonesian province that enforces Islamic law, yet their speech belongs to the Northern Batak branch of the Austronesian family. It sits closer to Karo and Pakpak, spoken across the border in North Sumatra, than to Acehnese or to Gayo, the language of their highland neighbors to the north. The Kluet of South Aceh speak a sister dialect. Most Alas do not call themselves Batak, a name many Sumatrans link with the largely Christian peoples of North Sumatra. Still, the kinship shows in how society is built. Families belong to patrilineal clans, called merga, with names such as Selian and Deski passed from father to children.
Faith shapes the ordinary day. Children learn Quranic recitation, prayer times structure work and rest, and religious verse runs through local performance. The best-known example is the Mesekat, a dance performed seated in a row, with the performers chanting and moving in unison.
The sharpest break in the valley's history came in 1904. That year a Dutch colonial column under G.C.E. van Daalen marched through the Gayo and Alas highlands to force them to submit. At Kuta Reh, a fortified Alas village, the troops killed hundreds of defenders and villagers, women and children among them. Photographs of the dead caused an outcry when they reached the Netherlands. In recent decades, Alas and Gayo leaders have campaigned from time to time for a separate highland province, called ALA, to be split off from Aceh. Their argument is that the interior has its own identity and gets little from the coastal capital in Banda Aceh.
