About Lachi People
The Lachi are a small mountain people whose homeland is split by the border between Vietnam and China. Most of them, around fifteen thousand people, live in Vietnam's far north, in the highlands of the former Hà Giang province, which is now part of Tuyên Quang. They are concentrated in the steep country of Xín Mần and Hoàng Su Phì. Smaller communities live across the border in Maguan County, Yunnan. Vietnam counts them as one of its 54 officially recognized ethnic groups, under the name La Chí. China does not list them separately. On one side of the border they have their own line in the census, and on the other they are grouped under a larger official category.
Their language connects them to an older and more scattered past. Lachi belongs to the Kra branch of the Kra-Dai family, and its closest relative is Gelao, which is spoken mainly in Guizhou. The Kra languages survive as small islands among much larger neighbors, and Lachi is no exception. In Vietnam it is still spoken at home in many villages, alongside Vietnamese. In China most Lachi now speak Chinese instead. The Lachi also divide themselves into several branches, some named by color, and the way people speak differs from one branch to another.
The Lachi farm steep slopes. They helped build the terraced rice fields that draw visitors to Hoàng Su Phì, carving them into the mountainsides and watering them through irrigation channels. They also grow maize, cotton and indigo, and families long wove and dyed their own cloth.
