About Jenu Kuruba People
The name says it plainly. Jenu is Kannada for honey, and the Jenu Kuruba are the honey Kurubas. They share a word with the Kuruba shepherds of the Deccan plains but are not the same people. They are also separate from their nearest forest neighbors, the Betta Kuruba, who were known for bamboo work rather than honey. Their heartland is the belt of deciduous forest where Mysuru, Kodagu and Chamarajanagar districts meet. It takes in Nagarhole, Bandipur and the taluks of H.D. Kote and Hunsur. Over the state lines in Wayanad and the Nilgiris, closely related communities are usually recorded as Kattunayakan.
Their own speech is an unwritten Dravidian language close to Kannada. Nearly everyone also speaks Kannada, or Malayalam and Tamil on the far side of the border. People live in small hamlets called hadis, where a headman and elders settle disputes and arrange marriages. Many Jenu Kuruba now live two lives at once: wage labor and government schemes in the colonies, and a firm belief that the forest is still home.
