That label grouped the Koireng with peoples such as the Chiru, Aimol, Kom and Purum, who were already settled in Manipur before the Thadou and other groups called New Kuki became prominent in the nineteenth century. The languages of that cluster are still close relatives. Koireng is the language of home and village. Meitei, the valley's language, is used at the market, in school and in government offices. With so few speakers, Koireng is counted among the region's endangered languages, so keeping it alive in daily life is a practical concern, not just an academic one.
Like most hill communities in Manipur, the Koireng became largely Christian over the twentieth century. The older religion of village rites and offerings gave way to church life, which now frames weddings, funerals and the weekly calendar. What did not go away is the village as the unit that counts. A Koireng settlement is small enough that its celebrations and its losses belong to everyone in it.
Politically, the Koireng are in an awkward position. Two large identity blocs, Naga and Kuki, dominate the hills of Manipur, and the small Old Kuki peoples have long been pulled between them. Those peoples have been counted sometimes with one bloc, sometimes with the other, and have often pushed to be counted as themselves. For a community this size, separate tribal recognition matters in concrete ways. It is the legal footing for land rights, reserved places in schools and jobs, and a say in a state where much larger neighbors usually set the terms.
