About Jaruud People
The Jaruud are Mongols whose name is also an address. Since the Qing dynasty the word has stood for both a people and a piece of country in eastern Inner Mongolia, where the southern foothills of the Greater Khingan drop toward the sandy grasslands of Horqin. On today's maps it is Jarud Banner, part of Tongliao in northern China. Mongols there still call themselves Jaruud the way their neighbors say Khorchin or Baarin: a tribal name that works as a hometown, an accent and a set of family stories.
The line runs back to the Khalkha, one of the great divisions of the eastern Mongols. In the sixteenth century the Khalkha split. The northern branch stayed north of the Gobi and became the core of what is now Mongolia. The southern branch, the Inner Five Khalkha, pushed toward the Ming frontier in the Liao River country. Jaruud was one of those five, alongside Baarin, Khongirad, Bayaud and Üjiyed, and its ruling house claimed descent from Dayan Khan through his son Alchu Bolod. In the early seventeenth century they were squeezed between the Ming, the Chahar ruler Ligdan Khan and the rising Manchus. A Jaruud chief was taken prisoner when Nurhaci's forces seized Tieling in 1619, and within a generation the Jaruud were under Manchu rule. The Qing split them into Left and Right banners within Juu Uda League, and those banner borders shaped Jaruud identity long after the dynasty fell.
Many Jaruud households still speak Mongolian at home. Their local form of Inner Mongolian speech is written in the vertical traditional script, not the Cyrillic used across the border. Mandarin dominates the towns, and most younger people switch between the two without thinking about it. Tibetan Buddhism of the Gelug school spread through the banner under Qing patronage. Like monasteries across Inner Mongolia, those here suffered badly in the twentieth century, and only some have been rebuilt. Older habits never went away. In summer, families climb to hilltop ovoo cairns to leave milk, liquor and blue silk scarves, and these gatherings often end with wrestling, horse racing and archery. Herding holds on in the hills, while the flatter south has long combined livestock with crops. Grazing limits in recent decades have pushed more families toward town life.
