About Humr People
The Humr are cattle people before they are anything else. They are one of the two great divisions of the Misseriya, a Baggara Arab tribe of western Kordofan in Sudan. Their name is Arabic for the reds, and the other division is the Zurug. Like other Baggara, they trace their descent to the Juhayna Arabs. What shapes daily life, though, is a closer chain of belonging: section, omodiya, lineage and the camp a family herds with. The anthropologist Ian Cunnison lived among them in the 1950s and built his account of nomad politics around that chain, showing how kinship decides who camps together and who stands with whom in a dispute.
Their year swings like a pendulum. When the rains come, the herds move north onto the sandy country around El Muglad and Babanusa, away from the mud and flies. As the land dries, they turn south toward the Bahr al-Arab, the river the Dinka call Kiir, where water and grass last until the rains return. Pack oxen carry the tents and household goods. Humr horsemen once hunted giraffe with spears, a feat of nerve that Cunnison recorded. It has faded as the animals disappeared from much of their range.
The southern migration is also where the Humr story turns hard. Their dry season pastures overlap the homeland of the Ngok Dinka around Abyei. For much of the twentieth century the two peoples shared that ground through chiefs who knew each other well, most famously the Humr nazir Babo Nimr and the Ngok paramount chief Deng Majok. Civil war broke that arrangement. From the 1980s Khartoum armed Baggara horsemen as murahaleen militias against southern communities. When South Sudan became independent in 2011, Abyei was left in dispute, and Humr herders' access to its water and grass sits at the center of the argument. Since 2023, Sudan's war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces has reached Humr country as well, with fighting around Babanusa and El Fula.
The Humr speak the western Sudanese Arabic they share with other Baggara, and they are Sunni Muslims. Baggara horsemen made up a core of the Mahdist armies in the 1880s, a history that still counts in Kordofan. The Humr's two main sections, the Ajaira and the Felaita, each contain several omodiyas under their own omdas. Oil fields in the Muglad basin, spreading farms and growing towns have pulled many families toward settled life, but cattle still stand for wealth, marriage and a family's name.
