Catholicism took hold and stayed, but it shares the year with a ritual life pointed squarely at weather and fish: petitions for rain, offerings tied to lightning and the sea, and mayordomias that rotate the cost and the honor of a saint's feast through the households of a town.
The language is the genuinely unusual part. Ombeayiiuts, our mouth, has no proven relatives anywhere. Attempts to attach it to Oto-Manguean, to Mixe-Zoque, to Mayan have all failed, so Huave sits in the middle of Mesoamerica as an isolate, ringed by Zapotec speakers with whom it shares nothing but loanwords.
