About Huave People
The Huave call themselves Ikoots, a word that just means us. They live on a strip of sand and salt flat on the Pacific side of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, hemmed between a chain of shallow lagoons and the open sea, on ground where farming is a losing argument: thin brackish soil, and a winter north wind that is among the hardest on the continent. So the Ikoots fish. Shrimp above all, taken from the lagoons with cast nets and dragged seines, dried on the sand and carried inland to the Zapotec markets at Juchitan and Tehuantepec, an exchange that has shaped their economy and their politics for centuries. Their own tradition says they arrived from elsewhere and were pushed out to the water by Zapotec expansion, and the name Huave is itself a Zapotec label, not a friendly one. Catholicism took hold and stayed, but it shares the year with a ritual life pointed squarely at weather and fish: petitions for rain, offerings tied to lightning and the sea, and mayordomias that rotate the cost and the honor of a saint's feast through the households of a town.
The language is the genuinely unusual part. Ombeayiiuts, our mouth, has no proven relatives anywhere. Attempts to attach it to Oto-Manguean, to Mixe-Zoque, to Mayan have all failed, so Huave sits in the middle of Mesoamerica as an isolate, ringed by Zapotec speakers with whom it shares nothing but loanwords. Four towns hold it: San Mateo del Mar, San Francisco del Mar, San Dionisio del Mar and Santa Maria del Mar, each with a variety distinct enough that speakers from opposite ends of the lagoon system do not simply fall into conversation. San Mateo is the largest and the most intact, still a place where children learn the language first, and where women weave on the backstrap loom, working animal figures into cloth in a pattern vocabulary that belongs to the town rather than the region. Recent history has been loud. In 2012 people in San Dionisio del Mar occupied their own town hall and blocked a large wind development planned for their sandbar, part of a long fight that killed the project in its original form and made the isthmus a reference case for Indigenous consent in Mexican energy law. The 2017 earthquake wrecked towns across the isthmus. The corridor and port projects keep coming, and the lagoons keep being the thing under negotiation.
