About Hpon People
The Hpon are among the least known peoples on Myanmar's official list of 135 national races. Their villages lie along the Irrawaddy in Kachin State, on the stretch of river between Myitkyina and Bhamo, the old trading town on the route toward Yunnan. No costume or festival is what sets them apart. Their position does: a Buddhist river people with a language of their own, living in a state whose name and politics are shaped by the largely Christian Kachin peoples of the surrounding hills.
The Hpon language belongs to the Lolo-Burmese branch of Sino-Tibetan. That makes it a cousin of Burmese, not a dialect of it. It is also very nearly gone. Few fluent speakers remain, and most Hpon now get through daily life in Burmese, which is the language of schools, markets, monasteries and government. Little of the language has been written down. A people can outlast its language, and the Hpon are living through that test now.
Religion pulls the same way. Theravada Buddhism ties the Hpon far more closely to the Burman world downriver than to their hill neighbors, and the government's own paperwork shows it. The state lists the Hpon not with the Kachin but among the nine peoples of the Bamar group, alongside the Dawei, Beik, Yaw, Yabein, Kadu, Ganan and Salon. That grouping is about administration, not language. The Kadu and Ganan speak languages from a separate branch of Sino-Tibetan, and the Salon, sea nomads of the Mergui Archipelago, speak an Austronesian language. The Bamar label says more about religion and shared Burmese speech than about ancestry.
What is still distinctly Hpon is hard to see from outside, and outsiders have rarely looked. Through the twentieth century the Kachin hills drew missionaries and anthropologists, while the small Buddhist communities on the riverbank below got far less attention. That gap is part of the story.
