About Hehe People
The Hehe were made, not inherited. Within a generation his people had a name, a state and a reputation, and the name is usually traced to the shout they went into battle with.
His son Mkwawa, a shortening of Mkwavinyika, glossed as conqueror of many lands, inherited the confederation and ran it from a walled capital at Kalenga, a circuit of packed earth miles long around the royal town. In August 1891 the Hehe ambushed a German column at Lugalo and killed its commander along with most of his force, one of the worst defeats colonial German troops suffered anywhere in Africa. The Germans came back with artillery in 1894 and broke Kalenga's wall. Mkwawa got out and fought four more years as a fugitive, then shot himself in July 1898 rather than be taken. His head was removed and shipped to Germany. Article 246 of the Treaty of Versailles required its return by name, which finally happened in 1954, and the skull is kept in a small museum at Kalenga. Few peoples have their sovereignty written into a European peace treaty as a line item about a body part.
Today the Hehe are mostly farmers and cattle keepers on the Iringa plateau, working maize and beans at altitude, with Iringa town at the center of things. The town takes its name from the Hehe word for a fortification.
