About Eyak People
The Eyak are the small people at the hinge of two worlds. Their homeland is the Copper River Delta on the Gulf of Alaska, a spread of silt flats, sloughs and barrier islands east of Prince William Sound, and their neighbors on every side were larger and better documented: Tlingit down the coast to the southeast, Chugach Sugpiaq across the water to the west, Ahtna Athabaskans upriver in the interior. Outsiders long assumed the Eyak were a local variant of one of those three. They are not, and the clearest proof is the language. Eyak is not an Athabaskan language; it is the sister of the entire Athabaskan family, a separate branch of Na-Dene. A few hundred people living on one river delta carried a linguistic split as deep as the one that separates whole families elsewhere. They call themselves dAXunhyuu, the people. The name Eyak comes from a village site, by way of their Sugpiaq neighbors.
Social life ran on matrilineal moieties, Raven and Eagle, with marriage across the line and obligations to the opposite side discharged at funerals and potlatches, a pattern shared with the Tlingit. Salmon set the calendar, and the Copper River runs are among the heaviest on the coast. The twentieth century arrived as a railroad: Cordova was laid out in the first decade of the 1900s as the ocean terminus for copper hauled down from the Kennecott mines, canneries followed, and the Eyak village by the lake was absorbed into a boom town built on top of it. Disease, displacement and intermarriage did the rest. Marie Smith Jones, who held the title of traditional chief, was the last person raised speaking Eyak; she died in 2008. What is easy to miss, and what Eyak people say often, is that the language went dormant and the people did not. Decades of documentation by the linguist Michael Krauss produced a grammar, a dictionary and recordings, and those materials are now used to teach the language back, in workshops in Cordova and by learners who came to it entirely through the archive. The 1989 Exxon Valdez spill fouled the sound and broke a herring fishery that has never fully returned, which for a delta people is not an environmental footnote but the thing itself. The Native Village of Eyak is a federally recognized tribe, Cordova is still a fishing town, and the delta is still the reference point.
