Their ancestral language is the southern dialect of Lushootseed. This Salishan language was spoken, with local differences, all around Puget Sound, from the Suquamish across the water to the Snoqualmie in the Cascade foothills. The shared language went along with close ties of marriage, trade and ceremony: Si'ahl himself had a Suquamish father and a Duwamish mother. Life ran on water and wood. Salmon runs, clam beds and cedar set the shape of the year, from plank longhouses in winter villages to fishing and gathering camps in the warmer months. Spiritual life centered on personal relationships with guardian spirits, and winter was the season for ceremony and song. Christianity arrived with nineteenth-century missionaries and is widely practiced today, alongside a revival of older Coast Salish tradition.
The turning points came quickly. American settlers landed at Alki Point in 1851. In 1855 Duwamish leaders signed the Treaty of Point Elliott, giving up the ground beneath the future city, yet no reservation of their own was ever set aside. Ten years later the town of Seattle passed an ordinance barring Native people from living within its limits. Engineering did the rest. When the Lake Washington Ship Canal opened in 1916, the lake dropped by nearly nine feet. The Black River, which had linked the lake to the Duwamish and fed an important fishery, dried up. The lower Duwamish was straightened and dredged into an industrial waterway that is now a federal Superfund site.
The Duwamish Tribe is not federally recognized. Recognition was granted in the final days of the Clinton administration in 2001 and reversed within months, and the tribe has pursued its case ever since. Many people of Duwamish ancestry are enrolled in neighboring nations such as the Muckleshoot, Suquamish and Tulalip. The tribe runs the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center in West Seattle, near the river. A growing number of local residents now pay voluntary "Real Rent" to the tribe, a household-level acknowledgment of whose land the city stands on.
