In culture they look north. Their language is Turkic, from the Sayan branch and close to the Tuvan spoken across the border, which makes it an island in a country that speaks Mongolic languages. Nearly all Dukha now speak Mongolian, children go to school in it, and the old language is seriously endangered.
Borders shaped their modern history. Reindeer camps once moved freely across the ranges between Tuva and Mongolia. When Tuva came under Soviet control and the frontier closed, families on the southern side became Mongolian citizens and lost easy contact with relatives to the north. Socialist Mongolia put their herds into collectives and many Dukha to work at the state fishery on Tsagaan Nuur. After that system collapsed in 1990, the herds shrank from disease and inbreeding, and outside veterinary programs helped rebuild them. More recently, protected areas across the taiga have limited the hunting that used to fill out a diet built on reindeer milk, cheese and yogurt. Tourism brings in money, along with a steady flow of outsiders to camps that sit a long horseback ride from the nearest road.
Reindeer are rarely slaughtered, because a living animal is worth more for its milk and as a mount or pack animal. At its core, Dukha religion is shamanist, with a layer of the Tibetan Buddhism found across Mongolia. Shamans still lead rituals for healing and for the spirits of mountains, water and animals, a practice that outlasted pressure under socialism.
