About Dan People
For the Dan, public life runs through masks. Ivorians often call them Yacouba, and Liberians know the same people as Gio. Most families farm upland rice and cassava and grow coffee and cocoa to sell. Dan is a Southern Mande language with a heavy load of tone. It is closely related to Mano and Tura next door and nothing like the Kru languages spoken by the We to the south. Christianity has spread widely and Islam has a foothold, especially in towns. Even so, the older order of a distant creator, the ancestors, and forest spirits working through masks still shapes village life.
Initiation is where that older order shows most. Boys go through camps in the bush under the eye of the masks. Near Danané, bridges woven from liana span the rivers, and tradition says initiates build them in a single night, unseen by anyone who has not been through initiation. Generosity gets honored in a very concrete way: the most hospitable woman in a quarter may be given a great carved ladle, as much a public title as a utensil, and she carries it at feasts. Outsiders mostly know the Dan through their carving. Their smooth oval masks, with narrow slit eyes or wide round ones, have been collected abroad for generations and are among the best-known African sculpture in Western museums.
The late twentieth century was brutal on the Liberian side. After Thomas Quiwonkpa, a Gio officer, led a failed coup in 1985, Samuel Doe's government turned on the Gio and Mano of Nimba County. When Charles Taylor's rebels crossed in from Côte d'Ivoire in 1989, many young Gio joined them. That war, and the fighting that reached Man and Danané after 2002, scattered Dan families on both sides of the border. The masks survived all of it, and they still come out.
