About Chiaha People
The Chiaha were a sixteenth-century Mississippian chiefdom centered on an island town in the French Broad River in what is now eastern Tennessee. Their people scattered after European contact, and their name lived on in later Creek and Seminole towns. Nearly everything known about the island town comes from two Spanish expeditions and from archaeology on ground that is now underwater. The anthropologist Charles Hudson placed Chiaha at Zimmerman's Island near Dandridge, which was flooded when Douglas Dam closed in 1943. An older reconstruction had put it much farther down the Tennessee River.
Chiaha followed the usual pattern of the Mississippian Southeast: maize fields in the river bottoms, stored surpluses, and a hereditary chief whose standing was tied to earthen platform mounds and the ritual life around them. It was not fully independent. Spanish chroniclers recorded it as subject to Coosa, a paramount chiefdom based in northwest Georgia whose influence reached across the southern Appalachians. No one ever wrote the language down. Most scholars assume it was Muskogean, related to the languages later spoken in the Creek towns.
Hernando de Soto's army reached Chiaha in June 1540, worn down after crossing the Blue Ridge. The town fed the Spaniards and their horses for weeks, and the chroniclers noted its stores, including bear fat and nut oil kept in gourds. The welcome ended when de Soto demanded women as slaves, and the townspeople slipped away overnight rather than comply. In 1567 Juan Pardo's expedition came through, and its written account gave the town a second name, Olamico. Over the next century, epidemics, the Indian slave trade and the breakup of the old chiefdoms emptied the upper river valleys. People called Chiaha show up again in the late 1600s and 1700s in Georgia and the Carolina Lowcountry, and later as a Lower Creek town on the Chattahoochee River. They probably descended from the island town, but no one has proven it. The English spelling, Chehaw, is still on maps in Georgia and South Carolina. It is also the name of a village on the Flint River that Georgia militia burned in 1818, even though the village was allied with the United States. The descendants of the Chiaha are counted today among the Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole peoples.
