About Atikamekw People

The language is the strongest thread. Atikamekw sits inside the Cree branch of Algonquian, close enough to Innu and East Cree that speakers can find their footing in a conversation, distinct enough to be its own thing. It is also one of the few Indigenous languages in Canada still learned by children as a first language, spoken at home and in the schoolyard rather than recovered in a classroom. Birchbark canoes and baskets are still built in all three communities, but the nation's public face now is mostly this: a small people with an intact language, arguing in two capitals over a forest it never surrendered.
