Nineteenth century observers recorded a funeral rite in which the sins of the dead were transferred to a calf, which was then driven off free; it has largely gone, but it is the thing outsiders always wrote down. What Badagas themselves argue about is status: classified as a Backward Class rather than a Scheduled Tribe in Tamil Nadu, they have campaigned for tribal recognition for decades without getting it.
