About Avikam People
The Avikam are the people of Grand-Lahou, the old trading town where the Bandama River reaches the sea on the coast of Côte d'Ivoire. Their home is a thin world of sand and water: a spit of land between the Atlantic surf and a chain of lagoons, plus the villages along the lagoon shores behind it. That geography explains a great deal about them. They fish and they work canoes. For a long stretch of their history they were also go-betweens, sitting at the point where river traffic from the interior met ships working the Gulf of Guinea.
Their language, also called Avikam, belongs to the Kwa family and is grouped with the Lagoon languages of the Ivorian coast. Alladian, spoken a short way east, is usually treated as its closest relative. What makes its position unusual is the neighborhood. The lower Bandama roughly marks the line where Kwa languages give way to the Kru languages of the west, and the Avikam live right on that line, with Dida communities just inland and farther west along the coast. People have been crossing that line for a long time, and today French does much of the bridging work in town.
Grand-Lahou grew up on trade. Palm oil and other goods came down the Bandama and went out through the lagoon mouth, and Avikam brokers took their share of that business before and during French colonial rule. The town's importance faded in the twentieth century as Abidjan and its deepwater port pulled trade east. Then the ocean moved in. Coastal erosion has swallowed much of the original settlement on the sandbar, known as Lahou-Kpanda, and the administrative town was rebuilt on the mainland. For many Avikam families this is not a distant climate story. It is the loss of a home place.
Religious life follows the pattern of the lagoon coast. Most Avikam are Christian, whether Catholic, Protestant or Harrist. The Harrist church grew out of the 1913 and 1914 walking mission of the Liberian prophet William Wadé Harris, who preached along this shoreline and told listeners to destroy their fetishes. Many did, but older ideas about ancestors and local spirits never fully went away, and they still show up at funerals and village ceremonies. Day to day, fishing, coconut and oil palm groves, and cassava plots still carry the local economy. The lagoon remains road, food source and landmark all at once.
