About Arma People
The Arma are what a conquest left behind. Their name comes from the Arabic ar-rumat, "the shooters." At first it named a job rather than a lineage: the musketeers that Morocco's Saadian sultan Ahmad al-Mansur sent across the Sahara in 1590. Today it names families in Timbuktu, Gao, Djenné and the smaller towns of the Niger bend in Mali. They trace their father's line back to that army, and they have spoken Songhay for about four centuries.
The expedition was a long bet. A force of a few thousand crossed the desert under the Spanish-born commander Judar Pasha, and many of the men were Andalusian exiles and European-born converts. In 1591 they met the Songhai army at Tondibi. Firearms decided the day, and one of the largest states in West African history came apart. The soldiers stayed and married local women, and within a few decades their tie to Marrakesh had grown loose. The garrison chose its own pashas, and the Pashalik of Timbuktu ran as a self-governing military caste that answered to Morocco mostly in name. The city paid a heavy price: in the first years of the occupation its leading scholars, Ahmad Baba among them, were shipped off to Marrakesh. Arma power wore down through the 18th century under Tuareg pressure, and in the 19th century the Fulani state of Massina took Timbuktu outright.
Losing power did not erase the name. Arma descent became a recognized rank inside Songhai society, remembered as the old ruling class of the river towns, and it still carries social weight there. In most other ways the Arma belong fully to the Niger bend. The soldiers' own languages gave way to their wives' long ago. At home people speak Koyra Chiini in Timbuktu and related Songhay varieties elsewhere. Like their neighbors, they are Sunni Muslims of the Maliki school, and prayer, Ramadan and the major feasts set the rhythm of the year.
The Arma are also unusual in how well their story is recorded from the inside. Timbuktu writers produced the Tarikh al-Sudan and the Tarikh al-Fattash in the 17th century, and the Tadhkirat al-Nisyan lists the pashas one after another. Their origin is written down in local Arabic manuscripts as well as kept in family memory.
