About White Tai People
The White Tai call themselves Tai Dón, and in Vietnamese they are Thái Trắng. They are valley people. For centuries their villages have sat on the flat bottomland of northwestern Vietnam's river basins. Their stilt houses line up at the foot of limestone and forested ridges, and hand-dug channels and bamboo waterwheels feed the paddies below. Sticky rice is the staple, and growing it sets the rhythm of the year. Smaller communities live across the border in northern Laos, where they are called Tai Khao, and in southern Yunnan, where China counts them as part of its Dai nationality.
Their language belongs to the Southwestern branch of Tai, in the Kra-Dai family. Its nearest relative is Black Tai, spoken in neighboring valleys. Both were traditionally written in the Tai Viet script, which recorded local chronicles, family histories and long sung poems. Vietnam puts White Tai, Black Tai and several smaller Tai communities into one official nationality, the Thái, now the third largest of the country's 54 recognized groups. Within that category the White Tai have kept their own speech, their own dress and a political history of their own.
That history runs through the muang, the valley principalities that once made up the Sip Song Chau Tai, the Twelve Tai Lands. White Tai lords held several of them, and the Đèo family of Lai Châu, the town now called Mường Lay, became the most powerful White Tai house. Đèo Văn Trị came to terms with the French around 1890, and his son Đèo Văn Long later led a Tai federation under colonial rule. The 1954 battle of Điện Biên Phủ, fought in the middle of Tai country, ended that arrangement. Hanoi then ran the northwest as an autonomous zone until 1975. Hydropower came next: the Sơn La reservoir flooded much of old Mường Lay and moved thousands of Tai households to higher ground.
Religion at home is practical. Households keep an ancestor altar, and spirits, the phi, live in the house, the fields, the forest and the water. Ritual specialists lead the rites that feed and calm them. Traditionally, a groom lived and worked in his bride's household for a period, sometimes years, before taking her home. In Mai Châu, a White Tai valley a few hours' drive from Hanoi, looms and homestay guest beds now share the same stilt houses. The xòe circle dance, which UNESCO recognized in 2021, still pulls whole villages into a ring at festival time.
