About Karenni People
The name tells part of the story. Karenni means Red Karen, a label outsiders gave them for the red cloth they favored. They call themselves Kayah, or Kayah Li. Under either name they are a hill people of eastern Myanmar, and their sense of themselves is tied closely to a small territory and a long argument over who should govern it. Their heartland is Kayah State, the smallest state in the country. It is a stretch of hills, river valleys and rice land around Loikaw that runs east to the Thai border.
Kayah Li belongs to the Karenic branch of Sino-Tibetan. It is related to the S'gaw and Pwo Karen languages spoken to the south, but different enough that their speakers don't easily follow one another. Like other Karenic languages, it puts the verb before the object, which is unusual in a family where most languages do the reverse. Speakers divide broadly into Eastern and Western Kayah, and the language has its own Kayah Li script, created in 1962. In a wider sense, Karenni is also used for all the peoples of Kayah State, including the Kayan, Kayaw, Geba and Paku. These groups share history and politics, though not always a language.
Religion comes in layers. Many Karenni are Catholic or Baptist, a legacy of missionaries who arrived from the late nineteenth century on, and some are Buddhist. Older practice has not gone away. At the Kay Htoe Boe festival each spring, communities raise a tall wooden pole to honor the creator and call for rain. Politics has shaped nearly everything else. Britain never formally made the Karenni states part of British Burma, and an 1875 agreement between Britain and the Burmese king recognized their independence. Many Karenni saw their inclusion in independent Burma as a breach of that status, and armed resistance began soon after. For decades it was led by the Karenni National Progressive Party. The state was renamed Kayah in the early 1950s, but many people still prefer the older name. Years of conflict drove tens of thousands into camps across the border in Mae Hong Son, Thailand, and from there to resettlement in the United States and other countries. After the 2021 military coup, fighting around Loikaw and Demoso forced a large share of the state's people from their homes. The drive to govern themselves, which defined the Karenni for most of the last century, is still unresolved.
