About Westo People
The Westo were a 17th-century Native American people who came south from the Great Lakes country into Virginia and then to the Savannah River. There they became the most feared slave raiders of the early colonial Southeast, until Carolina and its allies destroyed them around 1680. Their few survivors joined neighboring peoples, and no community carries the name today. They had no deep roots in the region. They were newcomers who probably spoke an Iroquoian language among Algonquian, Siouan and Muskogean neighbors, and their power came from guns bought from English traders and paid for with captives.
Many historians think the Westo began as the Erie, or a fragment of them, pushed out of the country south of Lake Erie when the Haudenosaunee broke that nation in the 1650s. Around 1656 a large group of newcomers that the Virginians called Richahecrians settled near the falls of the James River, close to present-day Richmond. They defeated a combined force of colonial militia and Pamunkey warriors and killed the Pamunkey leader Totopotomoy. Whether the Richahecrians and the Westo were the same people is still debated, but the timing and the route fit. Colonial estimates gave them 700 to 900 fighting men, a large force for the time and place.
By the 1660s they had moved to the Savannah River near present-day Augusta, Georgia. From there they raided the Spanish missions of Guale on the Georgia coast and the small coastal nations around what became Charles Town. Spanish records call them Chichimecos, a name first used for the nomadic raiders of northern Mexico. Captives were traded north to Virginia for muskets, powder and shot, and the raids helped drive the mission towns off the Georgia coast. In 1674 the Carolina agent Henry Woodward visited their palisaded town and opened a trade that the colony's proprietors soon tried to keep for themselves.
That monopoly was their undoing. Carolina planters shut out of the trade backed the Savannahs, a Shawnee band, and open war followed in 1680. Within two years the Westo were a scattered remnant, and some survivors are thought to have joined the Creek. What the Westo left behind is a way of doing business more than a line of descendants. Others copied their trade of guns for captives, and the Indian slave trade they helped start reshaped the whole Southeast over the next several decades.
