Before the reservation era they hunted buffalo on the plains west of the Missouri River, in what is now South Dakota. They belonged to a northern cluster of bands, sometimes called the Saone, along with the Minneconjou, Sans Arc, Hunkpapa and Sihásapa. Daily life centered on the tiyóšpaye, an extended family camp that moved and hunted together, and that sense of kinship still shapes who looks after whom. Two Kettles leaders signed treaties with the United States in the 1860s. When the Great Sioux Reservation was broken up in 1889, their home became the Cheyenne River Reservation. Today they are enrolled in the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, based at Eagle Butte. The town itself is a mark of loss: the Oahe Dam, built on the Missouri at midcentury, flooded the reservation's wooded river bottoms and forced the tribal agency to move up onto the open prairie.
