About Timuri People
The Timuri are usually introduced by way of a list they are not always on. They count among the Chahar Aimaq, the four tribes of western Afghanistan, alongside the Taimani, the Firozkohi and the Jamshidi, except when a source drops them and puts the Aimaq Hazara in their place instead. Aimaq is itself a Turco-Mongol word for tribe, and it hangs over the whole group: Persian-speaking herders of the highlands between Herat and Ghor whose ancestry runs back through Turkic and Mongol movements into Khorasan rather than through the Pashtun south. The name Timuri points at Timur, and the claim of descent from him is old, unproven, and has outlasted every attempt to check it.
Their country is the dry western end of the Hindu Kush, the Paropamisus ranges and the valleys running off the Hari River through Herat, Badghis and Ghor. Cold uplands, thin pasture, winters that make herding a question of timing more than distance. The Timuri have moved seasonally with sheep and goats between valley floors and summer grazing, and their shelter is the giveaway: not the black goat-hair tent of Pashtun nomads but a felt-covered domed yurt of Central Asian type, a piece of inheritance the language lost and the household kept.
They speak an Aimaqi dialect of Persian carrying Turkic and Mongolic vocabulary, close enough to Dari to pass unremarked in Herat. Religion draws a sharper line than language. The Timuri are Sunnis of the Hanafi school, which on the Iranian side of the border makes them a minority among Shia Persians, and in Afghanistan sets them apart from the Shia Hazara whose homeland abuts their own. Communities extend into the Khorasan borderlands and much further south into Sistan and Baluchestan, where some Timuri have long spoken Balochi.
Outside the region they are best known without being named, through carpets. Weavings attributed to Timuri hands in the Herat and Khorasan borderland sit at the top of what the trade lumps together as Baluch rugs: dark madder reds and indigo blues, close springy wool, small repeating fields, prayer rugs of a quality that embarrasses the label. War, displacement into Iran, and a run of hard droughts in Badghis and Ghor have scattered households, thinned the herds and pushed many Timuri into towns and wage labor. The tribal frame holds anyway, largely because it still does real work: descent, marriage, pasture rights, and who is owed what.
