About Tamien People
The Tamien are the Ohlone people of the Santa Clara Valley, the oak-studded basin at the southern tip of San Francisco Bay where San Jose, Santa Clara and much of Silicon Valley now sit. They were never a single nation. They lived in small, self-governing village communities, each holding its own stretch of creek, marsh and foothill, tied to the others by marriage, trade and a common language. The Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek ran through the middle of their country.
That language, Tamyen, belongs to the Ohlone, or Costanoan, branch of the Utian family, which makes it a distant relative of the Miwok languages. It was one of a ring of related languages around the bay: Chochenyo in the East Bay, Ramaytush on the Peninsula, Awaswas toward Santa Cruz and Mutsun to the south. Tamyen was written down only thinly, and what survives of it is fragmentary.
Life followed the seasons. People pounded acorns from the valley oaks and live oaks and leached out the bitterness to make mush and bread. Salmon and steelhead ran up the creeks, waterfowl crowded the marshes, and deer, elk and rabbits grazed on grasslands that people kept open by burning them on purpose. Families lived in domed houses of tule or brush, used sweathouses, and traded Olivella shell beads far inland. Their spiritual life ran through shamans, dances and the Coyote stories told across Ohlone country.
Everything changed in 1777. Spanish Franciscans founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís beside the Guadalupe that January, and colonists laid out the Pueblo de San José nearby before the year was out. Over the next decades the mission drew in the Tamien villages, and forced labor, crowded quarters and new diseases killed a large share of the people. When Mexico closed the missions in the 1830s, survivors were pushed onto ranchos as laborers, and the American period that followed was worse. By the 1920s, anthropologists were calling the Ohlone extinct.
They were not. Descendants of the Santa Clara mission community stayed in the region. Many now organize as Tamien, including through the Tamien Nation, to reclaim their traditions, protect ancestral sites from development and gather for ceremonies in one of the most expensive places in the country. No Ohlone group, the Tamien included, holds federal recognition. A rail station in San Jose carries their name, though few riders know why.
