About Tai Dam People
The Tai Dam are the Tai who never went Buddhist. Nearly every other Southwestern Tai people, the Lao, the Siamese, the Shan, the Lue, organized itself around the monastery centuries ago. They also write it themselves, in Tai Viet, a Brahmic alphabet used for ritual manuscripts and for the quam to muang, the chronicles of the valley polities, and given its own Unicode block in 2009.
Those polities, the muang, are the other half of the picture. A muang was a basin of villages under a hereditary aristocracy, with the Lo and Cam lineages supplying the lords, and the upper Black River country of northwestern Vietnam held a confederation of them known as Sip Song Chu Tai, the Twelve Tai Cantons. The French propped the arrangement up and eventually rebuilt it as a Tai Federation seated at Lai Chau. It ended in 1954 on the flat plain at Muang Thanh, which the rest of the world learned to call Dien Bien Phu. Many Tai Dam left for Laos, and after 1975 left again, through Thai camps to France, Australia and the United States, where the largest American community settled in Des Moines, Iowa. Those who stayed are counted by Hanoi inside the official Thai nationality, filed alongside the White Tai. The black in the name is worn by the women: a close-cut black blouse fastened with a row of silver buttons, a black tube skirt, and the pieu, a headcloth left plain in the middle and densely embroidered at the ends.
