About Tabom People
The Tabom are a Ghanaian community whose ancestors crossed the Atlantic twice. They were taken from West Africa to Brazil as captives, and in 1836 a group of freed Africans sailed back and settled in Accra, a town where almost nobody understood them. They answered greetings and questions with the Portuguese tá bom, roughly "all right." Their Ga hosts turned the phrase into a name, and it has lasted close to two centuries, long after the descendants stopped speaking Portuguese.
Many of the returnees had lived in Salvador da Bahia, and a large share traced their roots to the Yoruba and other peoples of the Bight of Benin. They left in the years after 1835, when an uprising led by enslaved Muslims in Salvador put freed Africans under suspicion and heavy pressure to leave Brazil. In Accra, Ga leaders took them in and gave them land in the quarter now called James Town, where a street is still named Brazil Lane.
The newcomers brought trades learned in Brazil, and families became known for building, carpentry, tailoring and metalwork, and for farming land outside the old town. They also married into Ga households. Within a few generations Ga had replaced Portuguese at home, and English came later with British rule and schooling. What remained of Brazil was Portuguese family names, a handful of words, stories passed down, and a firm sense of which lineages came back across the ocean. The founding group included both Muslims and Catholics. Today most Tabom are Christian and attend the same churches as their neighbors.
What keeps the Tabom distinct is institutional as much as cultural. The community has its own chief, the Tabom Mantse, who holds a place among the traditional authorities of James Town, so the group has a recognized head and a formal seat at local ceremonies. The Brazil House on Brazil Lane was restored with Brazilian support and serves as a small museum and a gathering place for families. For most Tabom, the identity is less about standing apart from the Ga, whose language, food and public life they fully share, than about memory: knowing that your family is the one that came home.
