The Shors were historically hunters, fishers and gatherers of the taiga, famous also as ironworkers: their old Russian name, Kuznetsk Tatars, and the city of Novokuznetsk reflect a long reputation for smelting and forging iron. They hunted fur animals, fished mountain rivers, kept small numbers of livestock, and gathered pine nuts and wild plants, living in log dwellings and seasonal camps. Industrialization and coal and iron mining reshaped the region and displaced many communities.
