Their language, Chalkan, sits in the northern Altai group of Turkic, close to Kumandin and Tubalar and clearly apart from the southern Altai spoken in the republic's political center. Fluency has thinned to a few hundred speakers, most of them elderly, and the revival work is local and unglamorous: primers put together by people who still speak it, lessons in a village school.
